Will digital and IT technologies make us obsolete? Will jobs be lost, never to be replaced? Wills salaries drop to intolerable levels? The history and theory of economics, and the evidence, suggest that in the long term, such fears are misplaced. In the short and mid-term, however, there could be serious disruptions in certain types of work, localities and populations. Policies will be required in the transition period to facilitate the flexibility and mobility of the labor market, introducing and strengthening safety nets and Social Security, and improving education and training.
