The International Federation of Pension Fund Administrators, FIAP, and the Colombian Association of Pension Funds, ASOFONDOS, organized the 2nd FIAP-ASOFONDOS International Congress named “The Current Financial and Economic Environment and Its Influence on Pension Systems,” which was held on April 23 and 24, 2009, in the Hilton Hotel in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. This Congress was attended by guests from all over the world, representatives of legislative and government authorities, domestic and international investment and pension fund agencies, mutual funds and insurance companies and representatives of the pension fund management industry, such as chairmen, general managers, investment managers, renowned academics and other professionals related to the social security sphere.
This Congress promoted reflection on the impact of financial crisis on the performance of pension funds in funded pension systems and gave a look at the fifteen years of the pension reform in Colombia. During the first day of the Congress was discussed the causes and implications of the current financial crisis, both globally and regionally, and its impact on the investments of pension funds. Regarding this background, it was discussed what kind of financial risk is relevant to manage in a mandatory pension fund system, and what are the most effective strategies to minimize these risks. And on the second day of this Congress was done an assessment of the performance of the pension reform in Colombia and its future perspectives.
