The Fide Foundation presents its International Congress II on “Nationalism, populism, and identities: contemporary challenges”, which will take place on April 4, 5 and 6 of this year at Jesus College, University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
In the global context, the growth of nationalism and populism is one of the greatest challenges facing not only Europe, but also North and South America and Asia Pacific. This can be a destructive force if it means that states isolate themselves and turn away from effective multilateral solutions to existing cross-border problems. Nationalism is a form of identity politics and should not be assumed to be always a negative force. However, the growing trend towards radical nationalism and, in turn, towards exclusionary populism, constitutes a great challenge for democracy and the rule of law.
The objective of this Congress is to bring together a group of professionals with extensive experience in the subjects proposed for deliberation (see below) so that, from different perspectives, drawing on areas of knowledge and expertise from several countries, in-depth discussions and analyses of the issues can take place. The Congress is organized into five Working Groups, which will articulate a set of conclusions and recommendations to be published and disseminated among decision makers, organizations, industry leaders and experts for their consideration by the competent authorities.
FIAP has been invited to participate in this Congress in a panel on pensions, where the topics to be discussed are, among others, the strengths of individually funded systems, the unsustainability of public pay-as-you-go systems and trends in Latin-American pension reforms, that in some countries are being influenced by a populist wave.
